It is now almost 200 years ago that Napoleon suspectedly died of arsenic poisoning. And to-date, heavy metals are still an important topic when it comes to food safety.

Looking at the most important heavy metals arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium, there is a lot of activity when it comes to regulatory limits and food matrices to be tested. Codex’ JECFA agrees to one acceptable provisional intake limit and EFSA’s evaluation concludes it is too high. Consumer organizations in the US find high levels of arsenic in some fruit juices and FDA proposes maximum levels. And EFSA follows suit: it does not only look at arsenic levels in cereals and fruit juices, it also looks at infant formulas and other matrices. A two-year monitoring exercise will be concluded later this year.

It is obvious that there is a significant amount of dynamic in this field. A free webinar by Separation Science on July 18, 2018, will look at the occurrence of heavy metals, their toxicity, and regulations. And last but not least it will discuss why speciation of heavy metals is so important.
