To combat food fraud and increase food safety in India the competent authority FSSAI (The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has been leading the way for mobile food safety labs since 2017. After the first mobile food safety van was on the road in 2017, FSSAI even published a manual for the mobile food safety testing van and a simple method manual for detection of food fraud. Last year (2021) a scheme for 60 of those vehicles was signed.
Most recently, also neighbouring country Pakistan made funds available for additional mobile food safety testing laboratories.
Due to the limited space, the type of equipment that can be used in such vans is limited. And overcoming this challenge is one of the goals of the recently funded TITAN project: creating portable, simple-to-use devices that, combined with artificial intelligence, can provide additional insights and data interpretation.
The project was funded by the European Commission with more than 11 million Euros, and 27 partners from 14 countries will work over the coming four years to make the food supply chain more transparent and food safer.
Meet the team that will work on combining artificial intelligence with miniature analytical devices based on nanotechnology. These testing devices will then be tested with selected food manufacturers on site.
